The French Rosa centifolia is a direct introduction from France. Due to its low yield (much lower than Rosa damascena), it has become a highly sought-after product. Rosa centifolia is native to the Caucasus and has been cultivated in Europe for centuries. The flowers bloom in May each year, earning them the name "May roses."
