It contains over 140 bioactive substances including flavonoids, organic acids, alkaloids, sterols, triterpenes, and various vitamins. With a rich history in traditional Chinese medicine, dating back to the 8th century, its medicinal benefits are well-documented in ancient texts. Recognized for its health benefits, it was officially included in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia in 1977, and later classified as a food and medicine dual-use plant in the 1980s.
